Back by popular demand!  Join local artist and founder of Maplewood Quilting Co., Maddy Shaw, as we unpack the art of collage.

In this workshop you will design and produce your very own piece of collage art to hang in your home or give as a gift. Working with an assortment of papers and textures you will be guided through the process of designing a unique piece of art. The focus of the instruction will be on composing geometric form through the use and balance of shape, print and color.

Camp Canary, November! Modern Dollhouse Design

We're offering another opportunity for your child to create their own dollhouse!  During Teacher's Convention week, November 8-10th we're hosting a 3 day Modern Dollhouse Design camp/ workshop for ages 5-10.

During these 3 days artists will assemble a modern dollhouse crafted by local woodworking organization Maplewoodshop.  We’ll design an interior blueprint and plan out wall colors and furniture layout.  We’ll paint walls and apply wallpaper, build our own mini furniture from an assortment of interesting materials, create mini art work, rugs and of course peg dolls to play with in their new digs.  The best camp ever.

The Natural Spectrum: Dyeing with everyday plants and food

Unlock the natural spectrum of color from flowers, wild plants, kitchen scraps and minerals!

Local natural dyer Amanda de Beaufort will introduce participants to the age-old process of botanical dyeing—the method of using plants to create sustainable, toxin-free dye.

This workshop will focus on exploring the basics of naturally dyeing with plants, eco-printing and creating paints from plants and minerals. We will create a dye bath from avocados and explore the free form technique of bundle dyeing.

Each participant will leave with a tea towel of their own creation and a silk scarf. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own small sized natural fiber (cotton, wool, silk, linen, etc.) garment or item to dye as well as any fresh or old/dried flowers. Any synthetic content will not be suitable for dyeing. Cotton tees shirts, onesies and pillow cases work well.

$95.  All materials including natural dyes, silk scarf, tea towel, fabric samples, plants flowers are included in the price of the workshop.

No previous dyeing experience necessary!

During this 3- hour workshop you will explore the instantly satisfying process of image transfer utilizing personal keepsakes, acrylic paints, and printing paper with Corinne of Open Art Spark. Keepsakes reconnect us to our human experience yet often lie tucked away from sight. This tactile process plays with memory utilizing texture, shape, and color which will be printed onto fine paper from the loved fibers of your keepsake. We will provide practice keepsakes to work with as we steer you towards a successful final print. You will take home meaningful compositions to gift- perfect for Mother's/ Father's Day- or place in your space. We recommend you bring more than one keepsakes to print with. Textures are expressive - knitted anything - hats, mittens, booties, sweaters, small blankets, anything with a ruffle bottom. Also lovely are socks, onesies, leotards, swimsuits, and lovies. Intro to Botanical Dying with Amanda de Beaufort

Local natural dyer Amanda de Beaufort will introduce participants to the age old process of botanical dyeing—the process of using plants to create sustainable, toxin-free dye.

Did you know that items you routinely throw out can be used to transform fabric and yarn into a natural spectrum of color? This workshop will focus on exploring the dye potential of avocado (pink/purple) and onion (yellow/green/rust/brown). Amanda will demonstrate ways to work with modifiers (to shift color), mordants (to fix color on fabric) and simple pattern making on fabric. 

Each participant will leave with a tea towel of their own creation. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own medium to small sized natural fiber (cotton, wool, silk, linen, etc.) garment or item to dye. Any synthetic content will not be suitable for dyeing. All materials including test fabric and tea towel are included in the price of the workshop.  $70

Coil Pot Ceramics with Jenna Komarin: A Two Part Workshop

In this workshop local potter Jenna Komarin will teach us the fundamental techniques of how to make a hand built ceramic coil pot. In the first session, Sunday 2/25, we will learn the process of designing and building your own coil vessel out of clay. In the second part, Sunday 3/11, we will tackle the process of glazing. We will glaze our pots to make them fully functional for household use. The focus of instruction will be on learning basic hand building processes and techniques with an emphasis on the relationship between form and function. A TWO DAY WORKSHOP, $65.

Drop & Shop: Card Making Workshop for Kids

Need a couple hours to get a leg- up on your holiday shopping?  Drop off your kids (5 and up) at the studio for holiday card printing, and then head downtown to the Bizarre Bazaar (10am-4pm) or our wonderful local shops.  We'll etch and print many holiday cards for your children to share with friends and family.  They'll learn about the process of repeating an image by creating a foam plate, and use real printing inks, and tools such as styluses and brayers.
